How it Works: For Students
TakeNote notetakers attend every lecture with you. Because they have already taken the class and earned an A, or are the TA for the class, the notetakers are intimately familiar with the material, and can concentrate on producing the highest quality notes for you. Professors often recommend or approve the notetaker, and all TakeNote classes are conducted with explicit professor approval. After double-checking the notes, notetakers send their notes to be edited by a professional editing team who triple check the notes for accuracy and supplement the material with their own expertise in the subject. Editors are graduate students who specialize in the discipline being covered by TakeNote. Some class notes are additionally edited by the professor for the course, who often adds supplemental material. The notes are printed and ready for pickup or delivery no later than the Monday after class.
TakeNote not only can replace your own lecture notes if you miss a class or would prefer to concentrate on the material rather than worry about taking it notes (or trying to understand what the professor is saying!) – it also can supplement your own notes with more complete and accurate information. TakeNote is also available to alumni or to students in other disciplines who want to broaden their education or supplement their studies, but can't fit a particular course into their schedules. Additionally, many students - underclassmen in particular - feel that getting TakeNote helps them improve their own note taking for future classes.
We provide a structure, highlighting the main points of each lecture (including graphs, diagrams, and summaries presented in class) that enables you to learn more from each lecture. Don't allow attending classes to amount to a four-year exercise in manuscript writing: by using your notes alongside TakeNote, you'll be surprised by how much you will learn.
• What is the history of TakeNote?
TakeNote was founded as the Supplemental Lecture Note Service at Cornell University in 1985. Since then our organization has steadily improved and grown. The Chronicle of Higher Education called TakeNote one of the best notetaking services in the country (CHE, April 1992). TakeNote employs notetakers that make their notes for many popular classes available to further students' understanding of the material covered in lecture.
• How much does TakeNote cost?
TakeNote costs less than $5 per lecture week. A complete set of notes for courses being covered live is priced as follows: $70 for a 4-credit course, $60 for a 3-credit course, and $50 for a 2-credit course. Reprints and HADM 4300 (Intro to Wines) are available for $40. . Students enrolled in multiple courses are eligible for discounted rates. See the Subscribe page for more information. Disabled students may be eligible to receive TakeNote free of cost - see the Disability Services page for more information.
• What courses are covered?
Every semester, TakeNote covers new courses - these courses are generally some of the most popular classes at Cornell. You can check out the list of current and past offerings at Courses Covered. If we are not currently covering a course that you would like TakeNote to cover, please e-mail info@tnote.com with your suggestions!
• How can I pay for TakeNote?
You can subscribe to TakeNote online via debit or credit card. TakeNote can also be purchased in person at the Collegetown Office (409 College Ave.) or at the Cornell Store using credit card, cash, check, or Cornell card (Cornell store only).
• Can I copy or reproduce TakeNote?
No - TakeNote materials are protected by US copyright laws. To copy or reproduce TakeNote without express permission is an express violation of the law subject to criminal punishment. Moreover, if we do not have enough subscriptions we will be unable to continue to offer coverage for a given course.
• What is the process for picking up my notes?
Notes are available for pickup every Monday after 2pm. When you subscribe to TakeNote, you choose where you would like to pickup your notes throughout the semester. You can choose to pick up your notes at the Cornell Store, the TakeNote office in CollegeTown (409 College Ave.), or get them delivered to any West Campus Mailroom, Robert Purcell Community Center or Appel Common’s mailrooms. When you select a location for delivery or pickup, you cannot change your location preference without contacting TakeNote.
• Can I get my notes delivered?
As long as you have an on-campus mailbox at a West Campus mailroom, Robert Purcell Community Center, or Appel Commons, you can get TakeNote delivered to your mailbox.
• What if I have an exam at the end of the week and need notes from the beginning of that week for that exam?
Although TakeNote prints notes every Monday, TakeNote will make every effort to produce notes earlier to accomodate your exam. Stay tuned to TakeNote's Twitter feed for updates, and feel free to e-mail TakeNote if you will need your notes early and haven't heard any information from us.
• Does TakeNote ever cancel classes it is currently covering?
Very rarely, too few students choose to subscribe to TakeNote for a given course, making it impossible for TakeNote to continue to cover the course. In these isolated cases, students will receive a pro-rated refund for the subscription.
• What if I drop a course that I've already signed up for the TakeNote for?
TakeNote is refundable up until the last day to add classes, usually around two weeks from the beginning of the semester. In the case that you drop a class after this date, you may exchange your TakeNote for another class that you are in and TakeNote is covering, or receive a credit for TakeNote in another semester. Refunds are unavailable for reprints.
• Can I look at sample notes?
Yes, here are sample notes from CHEM 3570 (Introduction to Organic Chemisty), BIO NB 2210 (Neurobiology), ILR HR 2600 (Introduction to Human Resources), or HADM 4430 (Wines).
• What have other students said?
"They are much better than any notes I could take in such a fast paced course."
"I can actually listen to the lectures and not worry about having to write everything down."
"They are reliable notes that I can use to supplement my lecture notes- just in case I miss a point or don't understand my notes."
"They pull a lot of information out of the lectures that I miss in my own notes."
"My professor talks too fast for me to record everything in my own notes."
"The notes are very detailed, accurate, and provide me with more insight to the lectures."
"They read like second text, they're really helpful."
"They are so thorough. I can pay more attention in lecture to the professor and worry less about copying from the board."
"They add things I missed in lecture, and clear things up that I didn't quite understand the first time."
"I compare them to my own notes to see if I missed anything."
"They are typed neatly so they are much easier to read than my own notes."
"I can pay attention to general concepts without worrying about missing details."
"The graphs and diagrams are clear and concise."
• What are reprints?
Reprints are notes from a course that we've covered in the past but aren't covering this semester. Sometimes subscription rates for courses make it impossible for TakeNote to cover a class "live" - however, if the class is being offered and we have covered it in the past, we will offer you an opportunity to subscribe to TakeNote at a discounted rate from a previous semester.
• I've already graduated from Cornell - can I still buy notes?
Yes! If there was a course at Cornell that you always wanted to take but never got the chance to, or a course that you loved but have lost the notes to, you can purchase the notes from TakeNote. Academic researchers and graduate students can also make use of notes from classes that may be helpful to their current pursuits, but that they are unable to take currently.
Alumni have stated that they have referred back to the notes for Wines (HADM 4300) countless times in their professional careers. See the Subscribe page for more information or e-mail info@tnote.com with questions or specific requests.
• Can I get TakeNote for a class I'm not enrolled in?
Yes! Students with an academic interest in other fields of study that can't fit a specific course into their schedules often find TakeNote of interest. Live courses or reprints are available for purchase. Notes for courses such as Wines (HADM 4300) or Human Development (HD 1150) are consistently popular. TakeNote notes are highly readable and informative even if you're not enrolled in the course.
• Comments or concerns?
TakeNote is eager to hear your comments or concerns regarding any aspect of the service. Please e-mail info@tnote.com or call (607) 793-4789.
